Pelican Theatre is proud to announce a new venture ~ the Pelican Academy of Performing Arts (PAPA)
For the last two years Pelican Theatre Company has been fostering the skills of its younger membership with Pelican Youth Theatre, which has offered drama classes in three age groups once a week.
Beginning last October, 2006, we offered an introductory course on improvisation and acting. This is in two age groups ~ 5-10 and 11-18. This course was intended as a preparation for the fuller curriculum beginning in February, 2007.
The new curriculum offers new and different learning opportunities. The focus is drama and theatre, but the syllabus is extended considerably and broken down into one-term units, offering certificates of completion. At the end of their studies, students will be given a transcription of their achievements. This will be acceptable to further education institutions as evidence of study and successful completion.
As well as teaching acting skills, we intend to offer classes covering technical aspects such as lighting, stage-managing, sound and stage design. Within a two-year framework, we will also be offering classes that cover singing, dancing and scriptwriting.
Each aspect of theatre education will be contained in a one-term unit which will offer a certificate for completion and an indication of performance within the unit.
We are planning to stage a performance of a large-scale work for children every year, separate from the adult performances but fully supported by the same technical crews and resources deployed for adult performances. The rock musical, PLANET, performed in September, 2006, was the first of these.
The venue for PAPA is the Hastings Hall, High Street, Hastings. The staff is made up of experienced and qualified teachers as well as people with professional experience in the Arts community. They are all certified as appropriate adults to work with children under the new State rulings.
