MURPHY`S CREEK was a great success. We hope you enjoyed it.

Scenes from  Murphy`s Creek, played at Hastings Hall June 2005.

What was the play about?

`Murphy`s Creek`is a warm, humorous and engaging play about a small country town in Victoria that is dependent for survival on the timber industry. However, the government has placed a ban on logging in the area and the town`s future is uncertain.

The play focuses on the plight of the Jenkins family who have been in the area for generations and may have to leave the town. To the town from Sydney comes an alcoholic and despondent writer, Amanda. She sets up writing classes and to the class comes Jane. Jane shows outstanding ability as a writer and soon begins to get her writing published.

Frank and the member of the local historical society have dreams of creating an historic railway and museum, perhaps to save the town, but there is no money. Amanda`s coming sets in motion a train of events that ends with Jane being a world famous writer, the establishment of a writing Mecca in `Murphy’s Creek`, government money for a museum and a successful tourism venture in Murphy`s Creek.

Above all else the play is about the dreams and weaknesses of being human and affirms our ability to overcome our barriers and to find our dreams. It also affirms the strength and importance of community and family.
